Father John Misty has returned with a new single, “The X-panded Universe,” while also announcing his first solo headlining tour in more than a decade.
Written and composed by Josh Tillman, “The X-panded Universe” was arranged by Drew Erickson and co-produced by Erickson and Tillman.

“The X-panded Universe” marks Father John Misty’s third standalone release of 2026, following “The Payoff” in May and “The Old Law” in January. The latter had previously circulated among fans under the title “God’s Trash” after first appearing in his live set in fall 2024. The steady stream of new music follows Father John Misty’s sixth album, Mahashmashana, released in November 2024. Tillman has also been road-testing more unreleased material this year, including during a surprise appearance at Newport Folk Festival, where he stepped in as a late replacement for Tedeschi Trucks Band and performed a largely acoustic set featuring several new songs.
This winter, Tillman will take that stripped-back approach on the road with his first solo headlining tour since 2013. The December run begins at Boulder Theatre in Boulder, Colorado, on December 9th and continues through Fort Collins, Santa Fe, Tucson, Napa, and Grass Valley before wrapping with a two-night stand at Carmel-by-the-Sea’s Sunset Cultural Center on December 18th and 19th. Those final shows will benefit Big Sur Park School. Damien Jurado will support the December dates.

Before the tour gets underway, Father John Misty will also play a sold-out solo show at Los Angeles’ Fonda Theatre on October 6th.
