Hayden Panettiere died from the toxic effects of fentanyl and other substances, according to a newly released report from the Greenville County Coroner’s Office.
The coroner’s office listed fentanyl, 4-ANPP, alprazolam, methocarbamol, and quetiapine among the substances involved in her death. An autopsy found no signs of trauma that contributed to her death, and the manner of death was ruled accidental.
The 36-year-old actress was found unresponsive and later pronounced dead on August 16th, 2026, at an apartment in Greenville, South Carolina. Her boyfriend Brian Hickerson, who called 911, and his brother, Zach Hickerson, were at the apartment when first responders arrived.
TMZ reports that authorities, including the Drug Enforcement Administration, are investigating the circumstances surrounding Panettiere’s death, including the source of the drugs involved.
In her memoir This Is Me: A Reckoning, published in May 2026, Panettiere was candid about her struggles with mental health and substance abuse.
