Mastodon’s “Poisonous Weapons Tour” stopped at the Brooklyn Paramount in Brooklyn, New York, on Thursday night, delivering a triple bill with Deafheaven and Alcest.
A single ticket offers the opportunity to see three of the most acclaimed metal acts of the 21st century, only enhanced by the fact that Baroness frontman John Baizley joins Mastodon for several songs at the end of their set. Sounds great on paper, but it was even better in person.
French metal act Alcest are the pioneers of the blackgaze sound that Deafheaven took new extremes, so seeing both of them on the same bill is a treat. Alcest kicked off the evening at 7 p.m. sharp, playing a five-song set that was as beautiful as it was heavy, with founding member Neige trading lead vocals with touring member Zero.
At 8 p.m., Deafheaven took the stage, and from the get-go frontman George Clarke was a man possessed. The singer was in full rage mode, as he prowled around the stage and riled up the crowd with an intensity that rivaled Corey Taylor at a Slipknot show. The band played a six-song set culled almost entirely from their latest album, Lonely People with Power, with the exception being the Sunbather classic “Dream House.” The set closed with “Winona,” which landed at No. 2 on our list of the Best Metal & Hard Rock Songs of 2025, and sounded absolutely epic live.
Then, at around 8:57 p.m., Ozzy Osbourne’s “Crazy Train” blasted throughout the beautifully restored Brooklyn Paramount, as Mastodon prepared to hit the stage. Drummer-singer Brann Dailor walked out first, and took his place behind the kit, as the rest of the band followed. Singer-bassist Troy Sanders and company launched into “Barbarians Blood,” the leadoff track on the new stellar new album, Marrow Deep, to get the 18-song set started.
This “Poisonous Weapons Tour” features a video backdrop that is absolutely stunning, showing animated imagery that is paired with each song in Mastodon’s show. Other highlights in the first half of the set included the Blood Mountain throwback “Crystal Skull” and Marrow Deep lead single “Your Ghost Again,” a song that was dedicated to the late former Mastodon guitarist Brent Hinds upon its release.
Toward the end of the recent single “Snakes for Dinner,” which features Queens of the Stone Age’s Josh Homme on the recorded track, Baroness’ John Baizley made his way to the stage to help put the finishing touches on the song. He then stayed for the remainder of the set, adding his powerhouse vocals and guitar playing to “Curl of the Burl,” “Oblivion,” “The Czar,” “Colony of Birchmen,” and the show-closing “Blood and Thunder.”
Mastodon pack a powerful punch as it is, but adding Baizley to the mix just adds more muscle to their potent set. Getting to soak in all three of these bands in one night was thrilling, and an absolute must-see for any metal fan.
