Sesame Street has found its way to Studio 8H, with Elmo, Cookie Monster, Oscar the Grouch, and more meeting up with Saturday Night Live stars Kenan Thompson, Sarah Sherman, Ashley Padilla, and Mikey Day for a new sketch set in the SNL writers’ room. There, the felt and human stars collaborate on a series of pitches that mostly offer excuses to look back on classic bits including Debbie Downer, Wayne’s World, and Domingo.

SNL and Sesame Street have a shared history thanks to Jim Henson, who produced adult-themed shorts for the sketch comedy show’s first season after helping launch the Muppets on the beloved childrens’ series. Highlights of this sketch include Cookie Monster recreating the Chris Farley character Matt Foley and Elmo doing a pretty spot-on Lorne Michaels impression — it’s also fun to see how Muppet-like Kenan Thompson is in this context. Watch the video below, and look forward to our ongoing coverage of SNL Season 52, with upcoming musical guests The Strokes and Phoebe Bridgers.
