Tame Impala have returned to Like a Version with a cover of Seal‘s “Kiss from a Rose,” marking Kevin Parker’s fourth appearance on the Australian radio show.
While this rendition bears many of his signature traits, it remains notably faithful to the original. That being the case, it essentially sounds like Tame Impala filling in for Seal rather than taking the hit classic somewhere entirely unfamiliar.
Originally released on Seal’s self-titled sophomore album in 1994, the song found a much larger audience the following year after appearing on the soundtrack to Batman Forever. The Trevor Horn-produced ballad went on to top the Billboard Hot 100 and earned three Grammy Awards, namely Record of the Year, Song of the Year, and Best Male Pop Vocal Performance.
Kevin Parker is hardly a stranger to the triple j series. Tame Impala first appeared on the program in 2013 with a cover of OutKast’s “Prototype” before returning in 2015 to reinterpret Kylie Minogue’s “Confide in Me.” Their most recent appearance was in 2020, when Parker tackled Edwyn Collins’ “A Girl Like You.”
The latest selection continues a curious pattern in Parker’s appearances on the program: all three of his ’90s covers were released in 1994.
Tame Impala recently wrapped up the Australian leg of their Deadbeat Tour, which included multiple arena dates in Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney before concluding with two hometown shows in Perth on October 24th and 25th. Parker & Co. will resume touring in May 2027, with a run of UK and European arena shows followed by several summer festival appearances.
